The best advice I ever got was that not everyone is your ideal customer. You need to decide what you want to offer and what you need to charge. You can't chase customers on price or even competitors on price. You need to decide what is best for you and what you need to charge. If there are clients unwilling to pay your price, those are not your ideal clients. The key for me was to then go out and target my ideal clients!

I create a unique photographic experience for my clients rather than simply "taking their photo". For HS senior sessions, we capture their hobbies and interests and photograph in a location special to them. For boudoir sessions, we create an empowering experience for our client as well as design products customized for their significant other. For family sessions, we make it about the emotional connection between family members and capture memories for future generations to cherish. Plus, all products are customized to clients' needs, wants, and budget!

Having a good social presence to allow people to find you in a search. Then, for me, it's about networking.....getting your name out to others to act as a spokesperson for you. I have joined a local BNI group as well as a local Chamber of Commerce. Both have provided excellent networking opportunities to increase my visibility in the community. Plus, I have started partnering with other small businesses in town. Doing some events together, and often with a charity involved.
I've been using Thumbtack for a few years now. At first, it was wonderful! I actually got alot of jobs from it. They had wanted a "total price", which any photographer could never give up front. So I always checked "need more information" rather than an actual price. That way, I could discuss in...

I've been using Thumbtack for a few years now. At first, it was wonderful! I actually got alot of jobs from it. They had wanted a "total price", which any photographer could never give up front. So I always checked "need more information" rather than an actual price. That way, I could discuss in person and quote an exact rate to meet what they wanted. Well, they changed the ability to use "need more information" and they require an exact price. I only quote headshots now, since one of the ranges happens to fall where I charge anyway, and a headshot session rarely varies. So, I still use Thumbtack, but for headshot requests only. It becoming a site for those simply looking for the lowest bidder. If you're the lowest priced photographer in your area, then this would be perfect for you.

Most times, solid background and controlled, studio lighting. But, if I'm doing headshots for an individual who works outside, we often go that route. I've done outdoor headshots recently for a landscaper and a contractor.

For a damaged relationship, I would meet in person. Schedule a coffee and meet face to face. Discuss what happened, own up to whatever fault your company should take, and change the direction for going forward.

Partner with a complimenting other local business, and that way both of you could promote. Or, offer part of the proceeds to a local charity, and then let them send out to their distribution list.

I'm a firm believer in giving first. Approach a business and ask where they need some help. Maybe it's an image for an ad. Maybe it's an image to promote something in their store. Offer to help them out by giving them something first, and establish a sharing relationship. After that,...

Offer to help them out by giving them something first, and establish a sharing relationship. After that, they will be more than happy to not only share your business cards, but talk about how great a business partner you are!
