What is in your sales pipeline?  Have your sales started to rebound?  How much cash reserve do you have? If the numbers support the decision to rehire, then it is a great time to rehire.  There are a lot of good people who were let go over the past 3 months.  It may be an opportune time to upgrade your talent.  Be sure that you hire people that embrace your culture.  This is called right people.  People who share your core values.  These are the people you want to be surrounded by the next time a chaotic event occurs.  The second point is to make sure that you are clear in what you are rehiring for.  What are the roles required of the seat?  Has it changed in the post-Covid environment?  This concept is called Right People, Right Seat, a term popularized by Jim Collins.  One of biggest frustrations of any business is people.  When you hire right people and put them in the right seat, you can significantly reduce that frustration and be more prepared for the next event. One other point to consider during this time to possibly upgrade talent is that I recently heard a business owner state that COVID did their manager’s job for them.  COVID forced the managers to cut staff and the first to go were the people who were not the right people for the seat.  There are two issues with this.  First, if managers are not doing their job to ensure that they have the right people in the right seats, then it may be time to upgrade the manager.  But before you do that or anytime you or your managers plan to let someone go, you must be able to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself these questions:  Was I clear in what I wanted them to do to be successful?  Did I give them the tools to be successful?  And did I give them my time to be successful?  If you can answer yes to those questions, then it's time to upgrade the talent. This is best for both parties.  If someone is the not the right person for your company, they may thrive in someone else’s. Have open and honest conversations with the members of your team as far as expectations and you should welcome and want that the conversation be reciprocal.
