Submission Wrestling
Watchdog’s Submission Wrestling program is based on a combination of Folkstyle Wrestling, Greco Roman Wrestling, Hapkido, and Catch as Catch Can Wrestling, or “Catch” Wrestling. Catch wrestling, a hybrid grappling style, combat sport that was developed in Britain in 1870 by J. G. Chambers, was popularized by travelling funfair wrestlers, who began developing their own holds, sometimes called submission “hooks” while wrestling that would increase their effectiveness when fighting opponents. Derived from a number of different styles, Catch wrestling originates from the English Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, Cornwall and Devon wrestling, Lancashire wrestling, Irish collar-and-elbow wrestling, and Indian pehlwani. Training programs of some modern submission wrestlers, professional wrestlers and mixed martial artists (MMA) is founded and used by catch wrestlers.
