When I was told to not talk so long with their customers. The only reason this company had happy, long-standing customers was because I treated customers like I would want to be treated. The company just wanted me to make more calls and get sales asap. Little did they know, my sales were just fine without making a ton of calls every day. Way better than those making twice the calls. People can tell when they are being treated like a number for profit. My referrals were pretty consistent as well, just like they are now. For over 30 years, I have been so happy, not treating my clients like a number. I can send handwritten cards, take them out for dinner or lunch for their anniversary, or mail them a gift card. I can celebrate them any way I want.
Here was the sequence for me. 1) realizing how much the company was making from me (as a consultant) and how little i saw of that. 2) putting so much effort in developing products that you could tell no one wanted but we had to seem productive. 3) realizing how little meritocracy happens on how executives/leaders are chosen in the corporate world.
Lay offs / re-structuring in the tech industry every few years did it for me. After my 4th lay off, I was done. I was done with working hard for companies that brought wealth to family names other than my own, only to get laid off at the first sign of restructuring, etc. I decided it was time to follow my own entrepreneurial aspirations and exercise more ownership in my professional future.

Working for toxic employers.
Me not wanting to trade my time for money anymore. Also realizing my freedom, plus I choose the unlimited amount of income I want to make.
