I am also shy and an introvert. I don't get energy from socializing and being around others. But being shy, I'm nervous in social settings and don't like too much attention. I also have social anxiety makes the socializing even worse for me after the fact. I have to have some alone time to regroup, or I can start getting really anxious and turn into a hermit. I wanted to comment because shy people are often misunderstood.
The actual definition of introvert and extrovert deals with the direction of energy flow when interacting with others; for introverts socializing is an energy withdrawal whereas for extroverts it’s an energy deposit. The more people the bigger the withdrawal or deposit. Being shy is a coping mechanism; both introverts and extroverts can be shy.
An introvert is someone for whom socializing drains them of energy rather then powering them up. So many shy people are introverts, because the energy drains plays into social anxiety but not all of them. I surprise people who don't live with me when I mention I'm an introvert because I'm not shy and rather talkative during my socialization time.
The difference between myself and one of my very best friends illustrates the differences between introverts and extroverts perfectly.
I'm an introvert. It takes energy for me to meet strangers, to talk to people, and especially to make small talk. This doesn't mean I'm not capable of interacting with people or even (I hear) being charming sometimes. But I find it exhausting.
My best friend, on the other hand, is an extrovert. She gains energy from interacting with people.
We finished class one evening and she wanted to go out and grab food and chit-chat. I just wanted to go home and sleep. This happened week after week.
Shy is different - shy people are bashful & embarrassed easily. Introverts are naturally drawn to solo activities & simply prefer small groups or 1-on-1 situations. Introverts tend to detest small talk & feel if a conversation is to be had it better be worth while, something deep.
I consider myself for introvert even though I like to chat, especially, with friends. I have no problem being in a crowded place only I prefer not to be in the center of the attention of everyone in the room.
The best description of the introvert/extrovert definition is whether interactions with people recharge your batteries or deplete them. I am an introvert and am very clear that I need a certain amount of solitude daily to recharge from my public-facing, people-intensive days. I love peeps but they cost me energy!
SHY is not the same as an INTORVERT in my world. I am not a shy person. I am an introvert. Most introverts are outgoing but in smaller portions. They just dont thrive in chaotic or "BUSY" or Crowded situations but have very outgoing personalities. Introverts dont feel empowered when with a lot of people as they feed off the energy of others and that can create an energy collapse in them requiring them to need to rest quicker and feel drained by all the energy around them. Especially energy that can be more negative in nature
I am an introvert and I wish I wasn't. My father and my son are outgoing people and I do envy that at times. I want to have friends and to have a life outside of the business but socializing wears on me. It has become worse because of the pandemic. It is like sensory overload and I need solitude to recharge. I am not that way with the business but I have been in this field for 20+ years and I could do it in my sleep.

introverts just get worn out from meeting with people. So sometimes they come off as shy cause they might not want to go to parties.
