After many years as a graphic artist and printer, I still think that actual ads will draw attention. Photographs are key, something eye catching is a must. Once you get their attention, you have only a few seconds to get them to read what you have to say before they lose interest.
I still do paid ads or sell sheets for my few remaining clients to post.
I think how effective they are depends upon your trade. As an electrician it seems like word of mouth, either in person or on the community sites for the neighborhoods, seems to be best. I have tried the various methods of paid advertising for 13 years and the results have never been good. Mediocre at best. Still have an ad in the yellow pages, and my online ad.
My experience is that paid ads on a FB page can be an issue for both the site and the advertiser. It all depends on traffic. Not just the number of likes(passive) to a page, but the amount of actual interaction with the site(active). FB Insights will help with some of that data. Does the ad resonate with your demographic? Also in Insights at the top of your page. The key to FB is in driving traffic. That is not simply a content issue. remember, FB is a"Social" media. If you are representing a product/service, what ever, always look for ways to engage as directly as possible with your friends and likes can be found. Keep it social and that will help close the gap on possible sales. As for Revenue, look into direct advertising on the site (banners, scheduled posts at key view times, relevancy)for better return than on more passive point and click
We began using paid ads last year on a regular basis, and yes it does generate likes. However, we have not seen a significant increase in actual contacts yet. Our business is a different model than most as we are a school that serves a niche community, so that may be part of the discrepancy. There is also the impact of being "top of mind", as we have noticed now when we say our school name, we get recognition. Hopefully, eventually this will turn into more contacts.
Also, since our focus is on a niche, figuring out a better place to get our message out has proven equally hit or miss.
Advertising and the customer reaction has changed. Today customers is looking for more the wow factor and what's in it for me. When marketing a new product, abandon the selling concept and focus more on, connecting with the human experience or ad humor to get the most of word of mouth marketing "which is more valuable than a slick."
Maybe paid ads work for tangible products provided the ad justifies the product as a qualifiable or substitute brand versus what you might regularly utilize. But, personal service businesses are confronted with convincing people mostly of your personality, professional qualifications and ability to meet their needs to assure a relationship. Paying for ads to generating revenue might get them in your door, but no present assurance nor future retention as a continuing client.
They create likes and a very limited amount of likes. If we're talking about Facebook advertisng it is the worst formate to try and promote a business . People use it to connect with friend and family and the consensses is that the public is annoyed by it . People still prefer advertising in print media overall . Its the most trusted by the public . Radio seems too gimmicky, social media creates a fear to click as it could take the consumer to another site that is untrusted or flung into a survey, when they just wanted more information. We all have clicked and been redirected and had to back out. The consumer is now conditioned not to click ads .
This is the first time we have had paid ads. We are putting together a Commemorative Booklet celebrating 20 years of helping to minimize domestic violence by enhancing the total woman educational, spiritually, economically and socially. We have set avenues for doing these things. We have had donors who have been with us year after year and we have listed the names on the back of our programs. (Not Bad) With the ads this year, they can add pictures and say words of congratulations. We will see the results soon. Wish us well.
After saying all this, the answer is we don't know.
Word of mouth and face to face interactions will generate the most revenue in the long run. Online ads may be circulated but will begin to blend with everything else consumers see and when they think of a real estate agent, they might not be able to recall your name anymore. Find something printed to give to people (business card, flyers, booklets).

It really depends not only the type of your business but also the audience that you are targeting.
In our case, we mix Ads, Post Cards, Referrals, etc.
All of sources have been effective.
I consider that if you concentrate your strategy in only one source, as ads for instance, the risk of failure will be higher as well.

my two cents
