To be honest, there are more appropriate platforms for business than Wordpress. A lot of businesses rely on Wordpress because it's readily available and the average web company doesn't have to develop any of their own technology (which is costly and time consuming).
The problem is that Wordpress was designed to be an enhanced blogging platform, and not a real business based web solution. So, you're taking a square block and fitting it into a circle hole. It might get through, but there's a lot that's missing.
Perhaps you'd be open to chatting? I believe we have a much more robust solution that is also incredibly cost effective.
Hi Judy,
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I first want to dispel the myth that wordpress is "not an appropriate business platform."
Many notable brands use Wordpress as their platform for business such as is posted here. https://winningwp.com/examples-of-big-name-brands-...
But you are correct, it is difficult to find the right mix of designer and developer that can truly understand your vision. And choosing the right company or individual is very challenging.
I was a designer ( interior ) before becoming a wordpress developer and even myself at times have difficulty understanding a particular clients needs, and yes it might take a little bit to get on the same page.
But not all designers can convey what they envision to a developer and visa versa.
A good company will send a prospective client a design brief or spend, sometimes many hours in communication, to make sure that they are a good fit for each other.
Take your time, in searching out the right fit for you vision.
Thanks for letting me ramble.

I used to have the same problem Judy, until about a year ago. At that time I partnered with a tech skills guy who does great design work. Plus, we now exclusively use the Divi WordPress theme and Divi Builder on all our websites. This combination enables us to build templates that really help us keep our design costs low. Check out our work samples!
Here are two other sites, we've recently completed., but have not added to our work samples:
Plumber in Alexandria
Todd Talk
I hope this helps!

Hi Judy - You are right about that. I've got a strong design and writing background - decades of both. When I needed my first website, I found that taking the time to explain what I envisioned was frustrating and very time consuming and since I enjoy creating through many mediums, I decided to learn to design websites myself and have continued my website design education over the years for my own sites and my clients. I personally like Wordpress for many reasons which I'm more than happy to share with you. If I can help, feel free to let me know. Nikki
Being a tech guy myself, I am well aware of this. I'm great at the technical side of building and maintaining websites, but not so much at the graphic design part. That's why the technical people are called "Web Developers" and the artistic people are called "Web Designers". Each are very different professions that rely on very different skill sets. Those not in the industry often get the 2 confused with each other or think they are one and the same.
I can definitely help you with the technical maintenance of your website and I have relationships with graphic designers who can help you with your design issues, if that's what you're looking for.
Others have also mentioned the security issues with WordPress and I'm well aware of them myself, and can definitely help you secure your wordpress site.
I've written a number of articles over the past year on cyber security and you're welcome to read this one which I think you'll find very helpful: http://www.radiantfreedom.com/how-to-keep-your-...
I can recommend myself :) What do you need help with?
A WordPress Assistant? That could mean several things:
a) A semi-technical person that helps upload text, graphics, videos etc and keeps your website and blog updated in terms of content.
b) A designer that takes care of the visual parts of your website.
c) A developer that handles the nuts and bolts of your website. Some people call such a person a webmaster.
In our company, we have separate people for each skills type and their services are priced differently.
What kind of help do you need?
I agree! I'm a designer who learned wordpress since when I first had a site developed for my business, I was not happy with the look. Now I implement and operate my own websites (3) and happy with the look AND functionality.
Two different skills utilizing opposite sides of the brain, Judy. Our team separates the design from the development. Our clients enjoy a web design experience first and once approved our techies take over and project manage the development of the website and bring it to life. Although we are a small business that caters to other small and medium sized businesses, we manage hundreds of websites across the United States and Canada and have an impeccable reputation for affordable solutions, fast turn around times and a willingness to coach and educate and train our clients so they feel empowered with their website assets.
As a tech developer - I would agree with your assessment they are two completely different skill sets. Here at Websidestores.com, a company that focuses on application development and database design, we partner with a design firms that will be solely focused on your UX and UI design and assures that your brand image will translate well between the web and print. Many companies focus on a web-design, that then falls downs in other media. Be sure whatever firm you choose understands your business and processes first and then can then bring the right design forward to express your companies personality.
