The COVID-19 pandemic hurt companies of all sizes. But small businesses were hit hardest. If your small business is finding it hard to stay afloat during the pandemic, you’re not alone.

According to Alignable’s latest report, 45% of small businesses have stated that they have earned less than half of their Pre-COVID revenue.

Alignable Road to Recovery Report

When we talk about economic recovery, we talk about revenue. And small businesses are still a long way to earn what they used to earn in the Pre-COVID world.

45% of small businesses have accepted that their revenues are less than 50% of Pre-COVID World.

It goes without saying that small businesses require more customers to reach their Pre-COVID revenue levels. But having more customers alone won’t make the cut in today’s time. Customers also need to have the same purchasing behavior they used to have before COVID-19 started.

Small businesses with below Pre-COVID level revenue are having slower revenue growth than customer growth. This means customers are increasing, but they are not buying as much they used to buy before the pandemic started.

We can easily understand this customer behavior. People are working from home and avoiding unnecessary travel amid the crisis. As a result, they are not eating out often and buying things as they used to do earlier. Also, the financial strain put by the COVID-19 crisis has also contributed to low consumer spending.

The Alignable report has confirmed the same – total consumer spending at local businesses is down by 18% YOY.

However, not all is gloom and doom for small businesses. The silver lining is more and more businesses are opening, and customers are increasingly returning.

65% of businesses were fully opened in September 2020, and 35% of opened businesses have reported that they have started to touch Pre-COVID customer levels.

More businesses are opening, and more customers are going out. This will eventually improve the revenue of small businesses.

Navigating Through the Crisis

Just because you have reopened your business, customers are not going to flood into your establishment. You have to adjust your small business as you reopen your business amid the coronavirus crisis.

Change your marketing philosophy, audit brand content to address new challenges COVID-19 has presented, and adopt the best hygiene practices to win customers back. You should also increase your advertising budget to amplify your message.

About the Report

Alignable conducted a poll among 7,726 business owners to prepare the report. The company conducted the poll during the week of September 28, 2020. Click here to know more about the report.

The pandemic has accelerated the retail shift from brick and mortar to online sales.  This is a sad reality that we all must now deal with.  My retail and economic development backgrounds have led me to this conclusion.  It's truly unfortunate, but those that begin to adjust first will come out better than those who refuse to accept the change.
The "reset Canada " and Build Back better always includes discussion of Gauranteed Basic income, I think that will be damaging to small business. all discussion so far has ignored the underground / cash economy, like it does not exist. I think it is not discussed because the ivory tower people don't know how to measure it , therefor they ignore it.  what do you think ?

I have been self employed for many years now...have recently been taking a break to go back to school for drafting and design technology. Learning what I use to do by hand on the computer. So I’m not able to say how much this has affected my business. I did just sell some art at the gallery that I am affiliated with in Cocoa Beach @StudiosofCocoaBeach.
I’m sure we are all looking forward for this to end quickly. Merry Christmas everyone! And a very prosperous and healthy New Year!

PA Small Business should request a response from their Governor where are all the funds went that were suppose to help many during pandemic.

Remaining $1.3 billion in coronavirus cash propped up Pa. state budget rather than help ailing industries during pandemic!

PA Fails Small Business?  Like to see an update on this news.  Many have applied for grants that are still awaiting a response since Mid-July!

I’m down 82.6%. Not much to say after that.
My revenue was actually up in 2020 compared to 2019. I made strategic business decisions instead of ones that I felt more passionate about. I have felt a an economic downturn coming, so i wanted to be insulated and so far it is working.
I also went back to school, and continue on to my third degree.
this bug thing did not affect me or my business, I did lose two jobs where the customers went bankrupt other than that business is the same. I find it!

Definitely U.S. numbers. We've been in a complete shutdown province-wide since November here in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Small, non-essential businesses have been suffering and rapidly closing. I've been fortunate enough to have a LL who's been supportive. Plus, I've been able to take advantage of our Government's assistance programs.

Happy New Year everyone! Here's to a new story for 2021.

We are down 45% since re-opening June 3 2020. Capacity and scared clientele has dropped us down significantly. I worry about getting through the next 3-4 months. There needs to be another round of PPP and Individual stimulus. 🙏🏻
