Self-care is what it means to the individual but I really believe that one of the biggest pieces to self-care/self-love is compassion. Compassion is the golden thread of self-care. When we are compassionate to ourselves, we are kind and when we are kind we treat ourselves well... we show LOVE to our bodies, our minds, and our soul..... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
As a registered dietitian, nutritionist I of course view eating a well balanced diet that keeps you in a right-sized body as key to self care. Also being mindful (of food and everything). Mindfulness keeps you in the present moment. You notice what you need when you are mindful. Adequate sleep, controlling stress levels, physical activity, healthy meals, being social, are all part of self care in my view.
Social media and even TV broadcasting depicts self care as performing a lavish act, such as yoga on the beach or a bubble bath surrounded by candles. These could be too time consuming or just not part of who you are. Self-Care could be anything that brings you inner peace. It could be as simple as making a grocery list to cut your shopping time in 1/2.
Self-care is self love and it is so important especially as a business owners. Exercise, rest, drink water and good nutrition is what I do for self-care. I also like to unplug from social media, television and all the noise (for 2-3 days) to keep myself centered and creative.
Self care to me means being mindful on how I choose to spend my time and energy. If I do things that support me: walks outside, meditation, yoga and healthy eating: then I have good energy to support others in my life and coaching practice. What things bring you positive energy and joy? That is a good question to determine where you mind spend more time for yourself.
Self-care is tuning in to your needs whether that is physical, spiritual, or mental. Listening and then acting on that need. One way I practice self-care is to journal daily so I am getting out the negative if there is that and/or to bring my mind into the positive and the present. In this time where we are more isolated, the need for human conversation is also important. So making sure you talk to someone, not just text is a way to up your self-care.
Self-care to me means resting emotionally, mentally, spiritually & physically when I need to without the desire or pressure to push myself to burnout.
Self-care means I am actively engaging in giving myself the same grace & compassion I would give to a friend.
Self-care means that I am honoring my self-love by accepting ALL the parts of me: the good, the bad, the ugly.
Self-care means setting, maintaining & enforcing healthy boundaries so that I'm able to give to others from my overflow and not depleting my own needs.
Self-care means doing the inner & shadow work via journaling, meditation, breathwork, etc. so that I maintain self-awareness.
I wish I had seen this thread long ago. I believe self-care is something we need to do everyday. Self care is more than a monthy spa treatment or a few hours each week to oneself.
Self-care includes those special things we do for ourselves but, also includes our daily practices. Self-care includes a healthy diet, enough sleep, enough activity, enough down time, social time (we need to interact with others), regular health care with a family doctor (specialist when needed), dentist, optometrist or opthalmologist, audiologist, mental health support through psychologist, counsellor, or life coach, ongoing learning. Of course we need more than food, sleep, & activity we do need special times too. We need a break from the hum drum of every day. Taking care of the whole person - body, mind, emotions, spirit are all needed to be healthy.
Maintaining a healthy self image, being able to speak up & not be taken advantage of, being confident in decisions & oneself, being able to love yourself & others, being ethical, compassionate & caring are only a few things that are often overlooked when it comes to self-care. Think about your values & whether or not you are living in alignment with your values. Being able to find & afford the help you need to live a safe & healthy life are foundations to self-care.
Self-care is an on-going continuum that needs to be happening all the time, not just a few minutes here & there.
Self-care is acceptance of who you are and giving yourself permission to become a higher level of your true self. It involves daily introspection, goal setting, positive mindset and meditation to mention a few. Caring for yourself emotionally, financially, spiritually, mentally and physical are essential to evolving and growing in life's journey.
