Before we jump into the small business ideas list, you might be wondering if it even makes sense to start something new in 2020. After all, it’s a shaky time to kickstart a new venture.

But actually, a crisis might be the perfect time to start a business. In fact, some of the biggest companies we know today came about in tough economic times, reports the NYTimes. As in Disney, Microsoft, Slack, and Uber, just to name a few.

Here’s why: 1. Less competition and 2. new customer needs, says Rashmi Menon, a budding entrepreneur at the University of Michigan’s Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, in the NYTimes piece.

“...whatever changes we face, positive or negative, bring up new customer needs. And customer needs are at the core of any business.”

The key is to be strategic about your industry and your operations so you set yourself up for success. And that’s why online businesses are the way to go.

Jeffrey DeSocio of AIMC Business Solutions suggests:

Start an online business and focus on a diverse set of products or services that people need no matter the economic state we're in.

 Great advice, Jeffrey.

Now that we know it’s possible to start a new gig, the question is what industry to go after and how to actually start an online business from home.

Well, I guess I'm an Alignable genius! I've been doing 4 of these businesses as a solopreneur and freelancer for 25 years now! Web designer, SEO consultant, social media marketer and former video producer/cable tv station manager. Be warned, they are not as easy as the author makes them sound. They all take solid technical training and experience, besides business savvy.

Greatness is found in many Business Opportunities. All it takes is Confidence Persistence Good Luck 😉 and Positive Attitude.I believe that anyone can be Successful by Applying these Simple Ideas.

Get known in your Neighborhood your Region your City.Establish a Network of Business and Personal Contacts.Be friendly always Greet people at the Super Market at the Pharmacy.Make people think 🤔 Highly of you.Do not be afraid to pick up the Telephone ☎️.I call people everyday.Hey its Jeff Sugarman calling.I have a Company called Sugarman International Group.I know a few things You know a few things.Lets put our Heads Together and Collaborate on a New Project.Lets have a Call or a Coffee ☕️ soon.If you Apply these Simple Human Principals you can be very Successful.

Those are all good options, except for maybe the SEO suggestion. I've used search traffic for all of my websites since even a few years before Google existed. The organic search industry has changed so much over just the past five years, that many of the greats have stopped offering SEO services for clients. Just seems like too much to learn to get started with if you're a novice looking for a way to make quick cash.

I thought the article was great. What if you could do a home based business that didn't take a lot of start up money, has already been established for 35 yrs. and is a product based business that are items people are already using? Especially now that people are shopping online & this company is set up that way. Plus the products are green, non-toxic and good health products with 100% money back guarantee.  What about something like this?

It is difficult [for me] to get an on-line business established.  I sew and knit items for the home, family, and dogs.  My main focus - pre COVID - was craft fairs - where I did well, got special orders and got my name out.  I was on Facebook for years - no business from that - and my web site through Square.com was also a wash.  I actually got sales within 48 hours of joining Alignable, but then nothing.  I am open to an ideas/suggestions to boost my home based business.

I like this list, except the "online recruiter" option. Not because of competition, (we welcome it) , but the false hope many get in the business. It takes years, decades, to become good at your craft. It is a very hard business to learn fast to replace income. Just a thought. If not, welcome to the jungle;)

I have advocated for folks having a home-based business for years. It's a fast start for reducing one's taxes; plus it offers great opportunities for building an additional income stream. If there is one take away from 2020 for me, it is always have more than on income stream.

My home-based business through Univera was a Covid casualty as the company decided to shift from a social marketing strategy to an e commerce strategy. In one instant, an income source gone!

Amazingly quickly, I found another home-based business home with LifeWave.com/DrRita. Lifewave has a breakthrough technology for boosting stem cells, noninvasively and affordably. At 78, using LifeWave patches for almost a month, I am seeing great changes in my health, more energy, better sleep, and less pain.

With the help of both Univera and LifeWave, I am literally walking my talk. Between August 1 and 27, I hiked 275.63 miles. I fervenly want others to be able to develop amazing capacity for activity and joy.

With LifeWave, I get to marry two passions helping seniors soar and live full-out and keeping multiple sources on income streaming into my bank accounts.

Good advice, just be careful who you are dealing with. I will as recently scammed by some one tech savvy with software that could share my screen when I get ried to ue PayPal. They took everything iny checking account. I reported I & closed all my accounts. Used to be a trusting society. But now I hat I cancelled my visa & debit card, can't even buy gas or food without them. Still have OR I'd as all Hawaii driver licence offices closed. I'm fine, staying isolated & healthy, but COVid has hit close by. So sorry to here about CA & OR fires. Living on 3 acres of lava close to the ocean, I m very fortunate. Wishing you well, sending Aloha

As a therapist, I often counsel people who are frustrated about their jobs. Many of them have great paying jobs but they feel stuck there and obligated to wear the ball and chain because the money is so good. Unfortunately, we have fallen on times in which simply having a job is extremely important. If you have the opportunity to work at something you love, the benefits of that outweigh the monetary gains. Work suddenly isn't a have to, it is a choose to. Your attitude and health will improve and as a result your relationships also. Yes, there are many options you have, so choose something that wouldn't seem like a job but something that would be enjoyable.
