We show our employees we care and we have a open door policy. We celebrate our employees birthdays to show We Care about them. Saying thank you and I appreciate you go a long way.
One of Stephen Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is to "begin with the end in mind." Applying this principle, we then must start with ensuring that employees know their "purpose," allow them to provide "input," "respect" them while they contributing, be "open" show "appreciation" and finally "reward" them.
The commitment and pride employees will have from their contribution to planning and execution of the goal will far out live any reward.
Make people smarter! Train your people...particularly on the soft skills so that each person feels like they can contribute positively to high morale. Often people appreciate others but don't say anything because they don't know how, are afraid of it being taken wrong, etc. When we do an "Engaging Your Team" workshop, each and every time morale has gone up...and it continues to stay high!
It's all about treating employees like customers. It seems counter intuitive, but it really works. Comfortable work space, fair pay, great benefits, fun team building events, and much more. Treat employees the way you would expect to be treated in their position, and you cannot go wrong. On your birthday, would you appreciate a cake? So would they. Would you expect a review, or bonus for your hard work? So would they. Would you have fun at a company picnic? So would they. I stand by this, and the people that work for me are 100% content with their positions and are committed to going above and beyond their job duties, because they now take ownership in their jobs. They feel they are a part of the company, not just an employee of it.
I pay my employees what they are worth (nobody who works for me stays in poverty), give opportunities for bonuses, pay for community college as long they they get an A or a B, take them to conferences with me, buy them lunches sometimes, and take them on field trips related to my business. I thank them for their hard work and make sure they feel appreciated.

Keep an open door policy, and acknowledge the hard work and contributions employees make. I also believe in promoting from within when possible. It fosters an environment where employees see room for growth which helps with morale. Lastly, if morale is real low, also take a look at your SOPs and Managers. Managers might be great at their job, but poor in communication.
Sending a "Thank You" note to their home address is an excellent way to ensure they and their spouse knows the employee is appreciated & respected!
Pay attention. In most cases, it's the little things that matter...
Individualize praise - for some workers, it would be donuts, others little notes of appreciation, others letting them skip out a little early or being flexible with their work schedule. A good company knows that not all "compensation" is created equal.
be specific - if you want a job done specifically, give them the specifics, if you are praising them on a job well done, tell them exactly what you liked about what or how they did the job. Sincerity is in the details.
make sure they have everything they need to succeed - there's nothing worse than having expectations set and no way to achieve them. By providing proper tools/equipment/support/time you let them know you want and expect them to succeed.
reprimand when necessary - believe it or not, reprimand in a proper setting can help set and maintain the company culture you want and expect from your employees. We all want to feel like we are part of a team that is working towards the same goals. Of course, it better be a standard you, yourself are following.
Nothing better in life than to work for a boss who makes you feel appreciated, empowers you, and above all does not micro manage. This level of trust gives me the empowerment of ownership, and value to being a part of the company's success! Did I mention flowers at special occasions......remembers birthdays.....Christmas parties and Bonus...most important words of affirmation <3
I believe that non-monetary actions work great in a small office setting such as Birthday and Anniversary cards, day off on their anniversary. Most anything that is PERSONAL If you give these things to your employee they tell others and advertises your goodwill and quality of your company, gets you more business at no cost to you.
