I learned to edit in the bad old days of physically cutting film with stone tools (may be exaggerated for comedic effect). I've used everything out there but for the last year or so I have really liked where Blackmagic is going with DaVinci Resolve and I haven't used anything else. The free version is amazing and you really only need the Studio version for the collaboration over a NAS or if you need to deliver a 4K DCI package. I highly recommend it.
Hi Alan, As a complete video production company, we use Premiere Pro along with the entire Adobe Creative Suite of complimentary and integrated software products such as After Effects for motion graphics and Audition for audio.
Final Cut Pro, has the most stability for all formats, and render speed, swell as a lot of plug ins for Motion, which is essential aspect of editing. Without 3D editing, other programs lag behinf, just my option from an old Avid and Premier editor
I do occasional video editing for my business and for family so I searched for open source program and found Openshot. It might be limited compared to paid software but for simple stuff it works for me.

Adobe Premier Pro CC 2018. Very intuitive, and it gets constant updates. Very happy with it.
premiere is great, especially because of all the available plugins. final cut is pretty similar but is mac only
