I love writing, it takes me away from the daily activities. At present, I'm writing a book...yes, in between my busy schedule, late at night, I sit and begin typing away. If I hit a writer's block, I step away for a bit to regenerate the words.
My desired career. I have an innate love for writing in multiple genres. I invested time and a chunk of funds to hone my writing skills and secure an MFA (studied publishing also), but life happened. Now I'm back on track writing my books. So know I'm writing when I'm mute for weeks or months.
I want to write. When I start writing I can write for an hour or double digit hours. It is like being in a different world. Almost as good as reading, except in writing I go where I want to, or my characters want to go. It is like being on a holiday with no specific plans. I'm free to explore what I want for as long as I want.
I think all the comments express what excellent questions these are! I write as a hobby, a job, and a calling. I have to admit that my hobby writing is the most fun, and much of that writing comes about from a writing prompt or something that happens in life that I think deserves a story (the calling part).
I also write as a job as a technical writer for defense contractors responding to proposals. It's not as easy as it sounds, but it's solid work for my business. My three books in the "Believing In Horses" series are part of my business, too, but that is not where I get my return on investment.
Happy writing, all, and it's been enjoyable reading the comments.
Writing is a calling in my opinion. If you don't have a passion for it you will never succeed in writing or will quit because the amount of work that has to be put into it. Being catapulted into the public eye may be too much as well.
In 2021 after hiding my secret as a burn survivor, I was encouraged by a friend/colleague to share my story for inspiration, encouragement and empowerment. Everyone has been burned, physically and/or emotionally, and I found writing my book was cathartic and it's launched me to speak to audiences so those listening know how I overcome many obstacles, from fears and phobias to body image issues. They learn they are not alone and by sharing our stories, when we are ready, is healing. My second book is in process.
I would say calling. I have been working on my book a long time. I wrote 3 different hand writing drafts each having the Main plot but with different supporting elements...I than look thought the 3 different drafts and cut and merged into a combined hand written draft that was the starting point for the book I have now, I have several rounds editing and minor rewrites not I am doing major editing...I hope this current round of rewrites I will have a draft to send to copy editer and get a book agent

I cannot wait until my book is finished!
Does "writing to simply be me" count?
