Writers: what words inspire you?

Maybe "effervescence" since it evokes joy and positivity in food, dialogue and in personification. Effervescence sounds flamboyant and fun when used in creative writing, but I generally appreciate most words since words can be creatively manipulated in poetry and prose.

I like words that have fallen out of vogue: cantankerous, rambunctious 

I recently came across this word which I love, probably because it has French roots. "abradabrantesque" which means "preposterous". and I assume has some relationship with "abracadabra" as in magic. You can check pronunciation on google. abra dabran-tesque

Resplendent and Opulent. 
They are two words that still stick out to me from the first chapter or two of my grandfather's manuscript that I read two decades ago. They say a lot in one word instead of five words. :)

I'm fascinated by words that sound like the opposite of what they mean. "Pulchritude," for example, usually describes female beauty, but it sounds like a symptom of dysentery.  "Malaria," on the other hand, is a deadly illness, but it's a lovely word that if it weren't freighted with negative connotations would be a sweet name.

It's not really a word, it's a punctuation mark: interrobang.

My word is “time”, not that it inspires, but it most certainly intrigues. Time is the most commonly used noun in the English language and among the least understood. As a student I was amazed to hear that time does not pass at the same rate for everyone. The faster we move through space the slower we move through time. If that doesn’t make you perk up your ears…you simply aren’t paying attention. Richard Hendricks used the word “entropy” in his response here and scientists use it to explain the reason time moves from the past to the future. It’s called the arrow of time. And it only points in one direction. I have much more to say on this subject and will do so in a post. But for those who think they understand time…they may want to reconsider.
