I agree with most of the replies so far, but I have an additional suggestion on how to motivate your employees.  I would ASK them what they want out of their position with the company.  I asked each of my employees in a friendly, non-threatening setting and found that each had a different motivator.  Sure, money was part of them, but the most frequent response was "flexibility."  That means a lot of things, but my techs told me that they like to be able to sometimes take off work early, or start later, or have a day off here and there (non paid).  I agreed to make this happen AS LONG AS they give me at least 1-week notice and are able to work if there's an emergency.  Our work environment has thrived since we started this in January.

I agree. In other countries, we offered a 9 day fortnight pay period. This enabled every wage employee to enjoy at least one day off every 2 weeks. It cut sick pay by 2/3 and made everyone much happier. All days off were scheduled and employees would negotiate with each other to cover shifts, if they required to have a different day off. It became the perfect scenario for single parents, who could modify their work requirements around children's doctors appointments, arrangements with former spouses, child care etc. Enabling your employees to create a better work life balance can go much farther than more money.

i found and still find that those who enjoy flex time in their jobs, tend to stick around longer, reducing turnover, reducing training costs while providing customers with continued stability. All ingredients that lead to higher profits.
