I own and manage my own apartments in chicago and have been using TenantCloud for a couple years. It is completely free for up to 75 units for most of the features. I use it to advertise my apartments online, tenants fill out the application online which I can customize, they pay by credit card and the full fee is transferred to my bank account, I pay for the credit/background check $35/report which includes a full credit report with score, eviction check, criminal check, SSN verification, sex offender and most wanted search. Also full lease management, sends out invoices to tenants, reminders, keeps track of your assets/equipment per apartment, tenants can submit maintenance requests, etc. All free. I also really like Rentometer to price my rentals - also free
