About Us
RDS Electric was founded by Robert Swier in 1981. We offer a wide range of commercial, industrial and residential services including energy efficiency products.
How We Got Started
My father was an electrical contractor and I worked with some as a teenager. When I graduated high school I was accepted into a 4 year electrical apprenticeship program. When I had 8 years of experience I got my electrical contractors license and started working out of our home. We've been in our current office location since 1986.

Whenever possible, I try to mentor and coach my competitors hoping that they too will become better businessmen. Competition can be a healthy thing and you can't stop it, so you may as well embrace it if possible. My philosophy is do your best and don't concern yourself with your competition.
Our largest challenge this year is not being able to find enough qualified help to perform the work available to us. It's a great problem, but still a problem. I'm aware that nationally there is a skilled help shortage across all construction trade fields.

Her comment to you sounds like extortion or a threat. It is a clear violation of your First Amendments rights of freedom of speech. Perhaps the question for you is are you willing to take on a Bully and stand up for yourself and your business? This is not always easy and may cost you a client and some sales. Perhaps some of Trump's supporters will rally to your cause and help support your business.
My opinion is that Nextdoor is ok to keep up with what's going on in your neighborhood, but it's not a marketing tool. We don't use any of the 3 for our leads. Pay for clicks and position on google. That gets results.

As an owner we have to decide what our time and money are worth to us. If you have sufficient business without an advertising venue like Home Advisor, great. If not, you have to be able to determine payback from the exposure. Have you kept a log of the contacts from Home Advisor and what the ROI is? We ask every new customer how they found us, we have a log that we enter that information into. When advertising doesn't pay for itself, we drop it. If you're uncertain if this is worth it to you, it probably isn't.
Perhaps a question is; Is this generating enough of the kind of business you want? If not, there's your answer.
I scan and only read what I believe to be of high importance. Otherwise it's trash. Most of us have a serious amount of information overload.

If you have to ask that questions, perhaps running a business is not something you want to do for a very long time.

Of course you have to know what you want to do as an occupation and how your personal skills compliment that. You may have heard the saying " the harder I work the luckier I get". There can be some truth to that. I knew what I wanted to do when I entered the electrical field, become an electrical contractor. So I worked towards obtaining that goal. Only after I started my company did I realize that I didn't know enough about running a company. I immersed myself in a variety of self help training classes and books. I got advice from experienced contractors about the areas that I thought I needed help with.
I'm a firm believer in working smarter than harder. At some point in my career I realized the importance of balance between my work and personal life. Without a good balance it's very difficult to be able to go the distance for the long run.
Find qualified advisors and use your best judgement with the information they give you as to how it applies to you and your business.
