How We Got Started

I started my own company after being laid off in 2008. I saw a growing disconnect small businesses not communicating effectively with their target market(s). He was very insightful with my business, helping me learn the whys of my choices and growing in a more productive way through improved consultation process, including estimates & pricing, and growing my knowledge in marketing. Patrick allowed me to make my choices and learn from them, and still ask questions to continue learning. I owe my success in business, including a rebranding of my business, to his training. Patrick commands two ends of the DISC scale (this WHY is amazing!) and is DISC trained himself. I highly recommend Patrick for coaching or mentoring to success."

As a solopreneur, it's up to me to find the work – even now – I feel there are other businesses that need the assistance more than mine does. As to resources, surrounding myself with positive people has been a tremendous help! They've served as mentors, whether or not they've realized it, not only providing creative ideas for my business, but also serving as a sounding board for frustrations. During the first few months of the pandemic, I taught people how to use online resources for meetings and continue to stay in contact with them to answer questions. I'm now focusing back on teaching business owners how to use their social media channels and create new channels if it makes sense for their business. I stay in touch with my clients and prospects largely by email or through social media; I ask them what best method is to contact them in the future and send them a calendar invite to block out time. A personal touch is terrific but not always easy to accommodate as they need their phones and time for their clients, and I want to make sure I always respect this.

(more) As a freelancer before I started my business, two of the things I found to be frustrating was communication, or, lack thereof, and expected "immediacy" from the agencies I worked with. The best way to overcome both is to keep communication open. I work with 2 freelance graphic artists and one web programmer, and they know once I have all the information from a client meeting, I detail back to them so they can get the project done. If the client updates this information, I make sure to get it to my group as quickly and timely as possible. One way to overcome the expectation on time is, again, to communicate your expectations to the freelancer. If you need something "ASAP" or "immediately", that should be defined. For example, most people think either term means "drop what you're doing and get this to me now". Sometimes, waiting a couple of days is sufficient. I understand that in many cases, the client ends up triggering this response. Did the agency follow-up with the client as deadline approached? Did the freelancer follow-up with agency to inform them the deadline was approaching? Don't want for either side to spearhead the communication and follow-up aspect. Take ownership of both tasks and be viewed more professionally in the eyes of both clients and agencies.
