I am a faith driven artist working and living in Grand Rapids, MI. I was born in Japan and my early childhood memories have influenced my very unique and personal artistic language. I received my BA from Calvin College in Grand Rapids and have been painting for the past 30 years. My work is included in numerous public and private collections and traveling exhibitions. I had the honor of being included as one of only 30 artists worldwide selected for one such exhibition in the first ever Contemporary Christian Art Exhibit. This exhibit was juried by the Vatican, viewed by the Pope and is still on exhibit throughout Europe indefinitely due to the demand for the show and it’s success.
My work was included at an international juried invitation-only show at the Carousel du Louvre in Paris France fall of 2018. I continue to receive invitations to internationally juried shows in Europe and the United States, including the Cannes Art and Film Festival and the Florence Biennale.
I have also been invited to be represented by Paks Gallery which has multiple locations throughout Europe beginning spring 2023.
My paintings are visual portrayals of my spiritual journey. My very unique technique and artistic language come from a place of deep contemplation and represent my intimate prayers. My hope is that the viewers of my work will sense a connection to my spiritual journey and come alongside with an open heart and spirit.
I enjoy the opportunity to speak often about my work and how faith and art are directly connected. You will also find me in much demand as a teacher of my creative process both in and out of the studio to students of all ages and experience.
The creative process and artistic language that I utilize in my work is completely unique and continues to evolve. I work on claybord with ink, oils, and acrylic. The black ‘calligraphic’ ink markings are most often the first layer and represent my very personal prayer language. This is followed by several layers of acrylic washes. The final layer is the application of oil paints.
