In my line of work you have to keep an eye on a lot of different things, weather, water temp, tides, and the list goes on and on! One thing that I and a few of my friends in the same business have talked about this very thing and what it comes down to is you either have it in your blood or you don't! To be a true tracker the more you know about what your tracking the better you will be at it! I'm tracking fish however, I started tracking game when hunting with my dad at the young age of 7. The skills I learned growing up are a huge part of why I am so good at what I do now. Bottom line is, the longer you do something the better you get at it! I've been guiding almost 26 years now but started tracking animals at a young age so I guess you can say I had a head start!
