Stefany couldn't have stated it better. We are engaged in a profession where the internet makes it convenient for prospective clients to take our "intellectual property" and expertise and use it to their advantage, bypassing us and our investment in their interests and travel dreams. We are not transactional- we truly have our clients' best interests in hand, are largely available 24/7, and spend hours developing the necessary relationships between our business partners and suppliers whom we can call on and jointly advocate for our clients. This takes time and should be reimbursed accordingly. I quote fees on a sliding scale after a 30-minute conversation with a prospective client, based on how much research and itinerary building I think will be involved. We usually work many hours beyond what "said" compensation covers. I never put a client on the spot and provide them with the opportunity to decide and let me know at a later time. In that conversation, I provide a lot of useful information and establish that I know my industry well. The majority of time clients accept my fees because they want to work with me. If they are interested in the bottom line and not the added experience I can bring to their travels, I have learned that those clients would best be served by other advisors. It is not easy letting business go but I think most would agree that no one is willing to work "for free."
Listen to clients carefully and summarize what they've told you so they can hear their own words. Make them feel as if they are your only client and try to be immediately responsive.
