How We Got Started
I was an exhibitor doing trade shows until I got tired of living out of a suitcase. I went to work for a consumer show producer in 1983. Eventually I started my own show production company.

My business is still shut down as the convention centers are still on lockdown and mass gatherings are not acceptable yet. I am grateful for my understanding exhibitors. I am grateful for the health of my family, friends and business associates. I am grateful for God's love.

They managed to charge my credit card though. Machinery and technology are taking away jobs from human beings. Online entities advertise "avoid the lines". Have you ever waited in a long queue trying to talk to a live person to get a question answered and being told to pick a number none of which relate to your question? Give me friendly, local businesses anytime!!

There are numerous print publications, radio station and television stations as well as social media, direct mail, etc. Knowing where to get the most bang for your buck is important. Keeping up with what attracts a targeted audience is also important. I have $10,000 + giveaways at our shows to help determine which advertising avenues work the best.

First of all, being able to speak with the final decision maker or all decision makers is essential. Years ago when I sold solar energy, many times a couple would say they were the homeowners only to find out their parents who lived in another state were also on the deed to the property. All homeowners were required for the decision. In business decision, it is important to have all partners involved or the final decision maker involved. It can be very frustrating to have one partner want to participate in a home show only to have the other partner say no because he wasn't consulted in the first place.
When selling anything, it is important to find out what the true objection is. Do they not believe in the product or service, is it financial, is it a lack of personnel, etc.? Once you know what the true objection is, you can work on overcoming it. If you don't know what the true objection is you can often hit a brick wall.

Much of Southern California has a lot of rapid growth and change. For my business, growth is vital. The more people, the greater the need for home improvement. We adapt to growth and change by staying on the cutting edge of advertising. It is important to maintain one's existing customer base through Eblasts, direct promotions and contact, etc. yet being open to new forms of advertising such as more social media. We always welcome new business but remain loyal to our pre-existing customers.
