What can business owners do to increase their presence on search engines without spending a ton on advertising?

I have a smaller graphic design business and I am slowly growing my customer base and reach. My advertising plan is connect with the people of those communities. I spread my ad posts out to all the community pages on a weekly basis, adhering to their rules. I have spent no money doing so and I use Instagram also. It has been fruitful and more business is coming in.
