William Rasdell Photographer/Digital Artist
I view my work as an artist to be that of a story teller. I'm strongly motivated by issues related to migration as a transforming agent in cultural evolution. My images investigate the many ways that ethnic convergence can enrich cultures with foods, religions, languages and the arts; just as it can erode the foundation of a society through over population, unemployment, homelessness, xenophobia and war.
For much of my career I have focused on the enriching impact of the African presence throughout the world. My pictorials reveal how these intercultural relationships evolve into contemporary societies and bear witness to Africa’s legacy of influence in daily global life and custom.
As a teaching artist and program developer, I draw from these cultural studies to create multimedia projects that are designed to expand social awareness, enhance critical thinking and cultivate visual literacy through interactive projects. For nearly fifty years these programs have been a catalyst for engagement and cultural understanding between communities in the United States, Cuba, Israel, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Romania and through out the Caribbean. Through a structured utilization of digital photography and social media we offer a platform for engagement between people from divergent backgrounds providing rare opportunities for insight into the lives of their global neighbors.
