You should be marketing online (virtually) through social media, SEO or other traffic driving strategy like AdWords or geotargeting. Market offline (real world) by attending evening networking events or networking groups like BNI, starting a mastermind group or finding avenues to get a public speaking engagement. Why should you diversify? Because different prospects respond to marketing in different ways. Additionally, diverse marketing not only helps you capture more prospects, it helps create your reputation. Let's say you meet a great prospect through a referral. Word of mouth is potent and will get their interest in you. However, what most likely will happen next is that they will research you online. A strong online presence composed of your (up-to-date and effective with testimonials) website and social media activity will legitimize your business, compliment your customer service and validate your reputation as the go-to person they need. And boom! A new client.

In other words, what non-monetary value do you place on your website? What is its objective? How are you using it? Are you marketing it or just letting it stagnate? The answers to these questions and more will dictate how much you should invest in making your website what you hope it will be. Like any other aspect of your business, you need to put time, thought and effort into your site to make sure it stays current, continues to grow and evolve. This does not mean you should be spending your billable time working on it, you should have a good online team to maintain and market it. Your website is an extension of your business, its value is not in dollars but in its ability to function as your business when necessary. This is the only way it will work for you.
