Yesterday, I read one of my children books (Nashida Visits the Smith Robertson Museum) on Zoom for a digital class. It was really fun. My network includes authors. I have also been promoting their works online.  (more) Yesterday, I read one of my children books (Nashida Visits the Smith Robertson Museum) on Zoom for a digital class. It was really fun. (more) Here is a list of small and university presses  https://www.newpages.com/books/publishers. All the best. Large publishing houses offer small advances to some exceptional unknown authors and maybe a little more to authors with a large social media following. Most authors who get good book deals with large commercial companies have agents. Agents are hard to come by. They usually get a percent of sales in the contract. My first book was published by a large commercial publisher. I obtained a small advance but my contract required me to purchase the historical pictures. Historical pictures are not cheap. Some large houses bill authors to prepare the index for non-fiction works. There is no free ride as many assume. I remember when one of my favorite writers got her first million dollar advance for a book. She was selling well. That was probably her third book. She sold 5,000 copies of her first book. Her first book deal was with a small press.  Kindle Publishing has a free program where you use templates, but they charge for professional covers and editing. Good covers sell books. I spoke with an author recently who self published through Kindle and he told me there were typos throughout his book. Kindle printed it and he sold it, but customers complained. If you are publishing for the first time, a little guidance is wise.  When you use the free template, you're truly "on your own" and "at your own risk."
