Hunger Fight
Our Mission
To end hunger and illiteracy through the provision of nutritious meals to children, seniors, and families in need and age-appropriate books to preschoolers by engaging communities and mobilizing partners.
Struck by the number of children in North Florida who live daily with hunger, Hunger Fight was founded in 2012. Headquartered in Jacksonville, FL we are a 501(C)3 nonprofit agency that began producing and distributing shelf-stable meals that are flavorful, nutritious, and easy to prepare in boiling water to those at risk for hunger in our community. In the last few years, after discussions with teachers and administrators, we developed Food for Their Bellies; Books for Their Brains, a two-pronged programmatic approach to address issues impacting a child’s success in school; hunger and lack of reading skills. The Feed the Backpacks program provides weekend nutrition for elementary aged children on the Federal Free and Reduced Meal plan, who receive food at school, but may be at risk for hunger over the weekend. The Feed the Need to Read program focuses on emergent literacy skills in children ages birth to 5 and provides books each month to children at no cost to the families.
