In 1987 I started a home cleaning business out of my home in a good sized Midwestern city. It was a "franchise". (I thought that would include some national advertising.) None came through, but I leased and bought cars, got logo on them, hired and trained maids, drove around stuffing newspaper boxes with brochures and coupons, and paid maids by the hour to do so to supplement their income & fill their schedules. Zoning officer told me I couldn't run a business out of my home so, I rented a low cost 2nd floor office on a busy street, put a mannequin in a maids uniform in my office window with a light shining on her at night. (People saw it. She was an attractive gal. ) I sent coupons through mail, did a booth at an expo, did yellow page ads, (no internet yet). I personally ran each lead to write notes of customer's "pet peaves" to make sure my maids got it right. Within 18 months I was averaging 120 homes per week.

YES!!! There are a large number of people who are looking for a church that has a church organ & piano and sings Hymns from a Hymnal every Sunday. You see them visit your church but not return. Many of these people are older and do not enjoy standing for 30 minutes singing 7-11 music, (7 words sang 11 times) "performed" by a rock n roll band. Our church offer two services. The early one is supposed to be Traditional, Like I described above. The 2nd one, Contemporary. But they keep trying to push the contemporary music into the Traditional service which annoys many folks. You can't beat the harmony and message of the old Hymns.

Those with their 1st newborn baby often care what water they use for the baby's formula. A 75 yr old farmer with the highest level of Nitrates I have tested in our county told me, "I'm 75 yrs old, I was born in this house, been drinking this water all my life and it ain't killed me yet, so, don't worry about it!" --The Bald Guy

Many new homes still have Raw Hard water feeding to their kitchen cold faucet. Because their toilet goes through their water softener, you could say that they are flushing the toilets with better water than they are drinking and cooking with. People need to be more concerned about the water they drink and cook with. It is the most important use of water and it seems like every month we hear of another water source contamination or a city water boil alert. That is great for business though...

As the owner of a Franchised Home cleaning business in the Indianapolis area I had a client call after the first time we cleaned her home to complain that there was a small piece of paper towel caught on the corner of her bathroom mirror and she didn't think her kitchen floor looked like it was done on hands and knees as she requested. My wife went over that evening to take care of it and while cleaning the floor, overheard the lady talking on the phone to a friend, bragging that she made "that new cleaning service come back that night to redo her home" to meet her demands. We cancelled her. About 18 months later, I had dropped the franchise & changed the name of the business. She called and spoke to me and arranged for us to do her home. Having never met me, she had no idea who we were. I came along with the maid team and personally saw to it it was the best cleaning job ever. That night she called and complained! I went to see her & asked her how she thought we did overall? She said my maids did the best job anyone had ever done and she had tried every maid service in the area. She said she likes the carpets vacuumed in a fan shape, starting at one end and backing out, with no footprints left behind, and thought the kitchen counter wasn't cleaned beneath the toaster because she could see a couple crumbs under it. So, I lifted the toaster while she watched, wiped the counter and set it back down, then lifted it again to show her the crumbs came from setting it down, and she had witnessed me cleaning the counter. I further told her we were the same company she hired 18 months earlier. I said "Yes, we are the best, but I won't let my maids ever clean your house again because you would burn them out and good maids are hard to come by." The biggest challenge in that business was getting and keeping good help. I sold the company a year later and changed careers.

The Michigan man in the wheelchair; I have been in over 11,000 homes but this one surprised me. A man drove a pickup truck to our office, Got a wheelchair out, set it next to his door, lowered himself into it, rolled to the back of his truck, opened the gate, pulled out a water softener and laid it across his chair and rolled up to our entrance. He had put the softener in his barn over the winter while he remodeled his basement. It froze and cracked the tank so it needed replaced. I drove out to his 2 story home and saw he had built his own elevator "box" from 3/4" plywood to move himself ,and materials, to the basement or up to the 2nd floor. We both got into it and it banged back and forth against the sides as we went down stairs. He had used an electronic hoist, like for pulling engines, to move it up and down his shaft. The controls hung down inside the Box. I was truly amazed at what this man accomplished. I choose to take the stairway to go back upstairs myself.
