I started Waiahole Nursery & Garden Center after retiring from 30 plus years of university teaching and operating residential and day treatment programs for children and adults with autism. I wanted to continue working in my fields of speech pathology, special education and mental health and also wanted to continue to serve adults with a variety of special needs as they transitioned into the work place. I realized there is a huge void in appropriate vocational training services, especially for people with autism, many of whom have high intelligence but extremely low social and communication skills. I wanted to establish career paths they could pursue which would capitalize on their strengths while avoiding (for the most part) their weaknesses. Our vocational programs are now internationally accredited by CARF. We offer career path training in 12 different areas.
