Why did you start your business?
Answered by:
I started Waiahole Nursery & Garden Center after retiring from 30 plus years of university teaching and operating residential and day treatment programs for children and adults with autism. I wanted to continue working in my fields of speech pathology, special education and mental health and also wanted to continue to serve adults with a variety of special needs as they transitioned into the work place. I realized there is a huge void in appropriate vocational training services, especially for people with autism, many of whom have high intelligence but extremely low social and communication skills. I wanted to establish career paths they could pursue which would capitalize on their strengths while avoiding (for the most part) their weaknesses. Our vocational programs are now internationally accredited by CARF. We offer career path training in 12 different areas. If interested, readers can find out more by looking at our partnering website lovelandacademyhawaii.com or contacting me at xxx-xxx-xxxx. Many of our services are free of charge to eligible interns.
I would like to add, that we have expanded our educational and training opportunities to all adults and children in the community. We have remained true to our educational roots. This past month of October we conducted educational field trips almost daily to DOE schools, funded through the Kokua Foundation, and are now doing field trips for the private schools on Oahu. We partner with after school programs to teach about Native Hawaiian plants and sustainable agriculture. We have interns who live on site and receive college credit for courses in aquaponic farming. We adopted the Waiahole Beach Park across the road and would love to have more volunteers help with beach cleanups. We donated over 5000 pounds of lettuce last year to feed the homeless and donated our flowers from weddings and events to hospice. Thanks again Alignable for giving us this opportunity to share our passions!!!!
