Having survived and enjoyed a career of 35+ years in design and sign fabrication, I have learned many lessons.
With small hand knives as tools of my trade, Lesson #1 was always Don't bleed on your artwork. Don't worry there will not be any blood in this story. A client had crafted an over-sized cribbage board for visually challenged friends. My job was to add the important finishing touches. Having applied the numbering and text, the crib board was ready for a varnish top coat.
The back door of my workroom opened to an alley and I set up the crib board on horses, just outside my door, to apply the spray varnish. Leaving it to dry, I went back to my next job.
Much to my surprise, ten minutes later, I found no cribbage board when I went to apply the second varnish coat.
As I finally learned, a local street scavenger had wandered by and popped his great find of a over-sized cribbage board into his cart.
This story ends happily, as I eventually retrieved the board, but I learned Lesson #2- Don't leave your project unattended.
