In my business, I can get a client to call me after not hearing from them for 2 years!  Customer service is key - you have to make them feel important (they are; otherwise we would not have a business!). Based on your mission, try to recruit professionals from your areas of service - such as teachers for an education program; health professionals for an HIV/AIDS project, etc.  You offer to give them exposure for their contributions, either financial or influence. When you own your own business, you cannot slack up and expect income to flow. You are constantly doing the checks and balances to make sure you finished the work so that you can invoice to get the payment by the due date of your next car note.....and so it goes. Some people think that before the ink dries on their 501c3 Determination Letter that money will start falling from the sky. Whether for-profit or non-profit - this has to be handled like a business. You have to follow structure, procedure and policies. The achillies heel for most new organizations is building credit (or getting those first few grants). You have to be willing to put some "skin in the game" - why should a stranger support you financially when you have not shown that you have invested yourself?

People's eyes light up when they hear that they are in the presence of a grant writer. They see dollar signs! Then I quickly educate them on what it takes to even be ready to apply and that there are no quick, easy ways to get funding. A non-profit is still a business, and should be well thought-out in order to be successful. Grants are only one piece of the whole - founders have to be resourceful on other streams of income.

I would suggest trying to find an existing business and location that you can lease space from - like a beauty salon, spa or something like that - this gives you exposure to a whole new market. I agree with Lance. Treat your client as the expert in their business; you are there to help them brand, build capacity and fortify their strengths. (more) I agree with Lance.
