I've had the good fortune to be self-employed almost my entire life. My experience has guided me to find a consumer need and fill it. This simple philosophy has worked for me time and again. However, there are a few stumbling blocks you'll need to avoid. When you try to build a new business keep in mind, it's not your child. In other words, don't get emotionally involved to the point where you hang on too long to a concept that just isn't working, it's just business, know when to get off the horse you're riding... then find a new horse and start again. Finally, before you begin, do your research. Find "your" unique place in the market then go for it. The more you try the better you'll get!

All the best!!!
