I have been in all kinds of networking situations, where people introduce themselves and both exchange cards then go on to discuss what they do and to find out what type of business relationship they can create, or they have the discussion first then exchange. I do appreciate having a card to refresh my memory after the event of people I have met and want to follow up with.
In response to Tony about a bunch of cards on his desk, I was introduced to card-copying apps and found them to be invaluable. I use Cam-Card and love its many features. I take a photo of the card on my phone, and it automatically downloads the information into the format (name line, phone line, email line, etc). It also allows to save into any groups I have created (networking group contacts, chambers and associations, personal, etc), so I can find a card by group as well as by other search option. Now I have all the cards at my ready.
