If you have dealt with them for sometime and have allowed this to go on unfortunately they now expect it.  If you have a great relationship with them simply ask, do they wait that long for their clients to pay them. Going forward I would insist on a valid credit card as backup as well as a deposit. If you are trying to introduce yourself/company to obtain business and still have no response, if he is local then go to him.  If he still won't see you then you have to decide how much time you want to put into something that may never happen.

This way you are able to educate the customer on why your product/service etc. has a higher price and yes, show your service is superior to your competition. Cheaper isn't always better and if the customer doesn't see the difference between you and your competition, let them go to the competition. I have had people tell me they got a cheaper rate at XYZ hotel and if I will match that offer they will stay with us. I tell them if the offer XYZ gave them is the price they want then they should call them back right away before they change their mind. Many times I get a call back from them saying they decided to go with our hotel because of blah, blah, blah. As Mark said YOU pick your customer. Do you want one that will nickel and dime you to death and end up complaining about everything or do you want the one that is willing to work with you and knows you will take care of them? I personally prefer the latter.

Host a Member Mixer such as a breakfast meeting or one of the monthly After Hours Chamber functions. Have an Open House and invite your current clients (ask them to bring a guest or two) and potential clients so they are able to see what you offer and make it fun for everyone. Have a small gift for everyone, perhaps an ink pen with your companies info on it and tie your business card to each one with a bright color ribbon. Ask for those referrals and always carry your business cards with you. I have booked business from standing in a check out line while shopping and talking to people. One last thing, have faith and confidence in yourself!

A true sell for front desk staff in my opinion is when they have asked the questions, gotten the information, followed up with the company and then shared it with the DOS and or sales manager. Then if a booking comes from it that front desk person did make a sell. The importance of front desk asking questions is imperative as is putting the guest information on the reservation including the company name. If the person is a walk in and asking for a rate for the night, then the front desk person should quote them the rate not the sales person. However, if it is group the rate should be quoted by someone in sales. It is up to the sales person to qualify, ask the right questions and book the group. Then yes, it would be the sales person that sold the group and receive credit for the sell. I hope that helped.
