the curious thing about referrals is how do you get the first customer so that you get the first referral? It's the same question I ask many older businesses who say "everyone around here know us and we get plenty of referrals".  Ok I'll buy that except that every year any business looses... It's the same question I ask many older businesses who say "everyone around here know us and we get plenty of referrals".  Ok I'll buy that except that every year any business looses customers.  In my town there are just as many people who currently live here  as there are that reside up at Green Hills Cemetery, and unfortunatly the later aren't buying much these days. And then there are all those who retire and move away, there's about a 3-5% turn over rate and even though that's not very much of your potential market in any given year over a decade that's 30-50%. That actually matters and if you are a really successful business person you are spending most of your time working at what you do best, not going out and meeting even 300 new people who aren't in your network. So how do you market and advertise to make up for the turn over in client base? Social media helps but it has low retention rate, direct mail marketing is costly with about 1% return. the 80/20 rule still works in most businesses- meaning you make 80% of your sales from 20% of your customers. This of course doesn't address one's capacity to grow the base upon which these percentages (more) the 80/20 rule still works in most businesses- meaning you make 80% of your sales from 20% of your customers. I trust more of what I read in hard copy from trusted sources, I get a ton of email pr which I filter and look briefly at social media, yahoo news feeds and then compare to what the mainstream TV news puts out to see what the "official" news cycle is dealing with. I also look to Alternative news NOT Alt-right faux news sources. Democracy Now, Mother Jones and the Nation are some good sources for the non-mainstream perspectives. What you get with just one form of digital news is a very narrow bandwidth that is tailored to your past profiles that don't give you what might surprise you with hard copy and alternative news sources.
