It's a pleasure joining the Alignable community. I'm a produced, award-winning screenwriter, novelist, non-fiction book author, former development exec, author of books and DVDs on screenwriting, and occasional screenwriting speaker/panelist/workshop leader. I've been blessed to be flown around the world to work and speak on screenwriting, from Nanjing, China to Paris, France.
In the past year I've written the screenplay for a $35 million, English-language feature film for a Chinese studio, rewrote the script for a $3 million Canadian feature, wrote two book adaptations, had one of my own spec scripts produced and am currently in active negotiations with a Canadian production company to sell another of my spec scripts.
Through a combination of hard work, perseverance, and a lot of luck, I've managed to make a very good living from what I love to do, and I wish the same to all of you.

There is much to mourn and perhaps even be bitter about -- the pandemic, the political meltdown and perhaps even treason, the civil uprising... and on and on and on. But there is much to be grateful for, even amidst the death and disturbance in the political and moral fabric of the nation and the world, including being alive and being of sound enough mind to realize what is happening and the opportunities for growth that so often accompany tragedy, even tragedy on this scale. We have been given the clearest possible view of the country's and the government's weaknesses and the dangers posed by those weaknesses. We've seen what happens when we are divided and filled with hate, so we should be grateful for being able to see this and yet still have time to do something about it. We see the pollution and the effects of climactic catastrophe and we still, perhaps, have a choice. Whether we make the RIGHT choice... who knows, but as of now at least, I think we still have that choice. Please God that we do make the right choice, if not for our own sakes, then for the sakes of our children and children's children.

The pandemic continues, although a lot of people seem to think it is over and no longer a threat. I attended an HOA meeting last night in which only one of the board members wore a mask and even it was a flimsy bandana that would be more effective while robbing a bank than in dealing with a deadly virus that has already killed nearly 200,000 Americans. That said, my response to the pandemic was to adapt but to also charge it head-on. I adapted because I moved from being "just" a screenwriter to becoming a film producer, forming not one but two film production companies. In the weeks and months since I took that decision and brought two teams together to partner with me on producing two scripts of mine, we have created full packages, including trailers, executive summaries, budgets, look books/pitch decks, and scripts. We have begun sending the packages out to interested producers and are already receiving an extremely positive response from producers wanting to partner with us and help bring funding to the projects. So I adapted and charged forward with renewed vigor ALTHOUGH... although I have to admit that the stress of the pandemic is still there, still wearing me down so that I have to force myself to keep charging into its teeth, refusing to let it defeat me. And of course, as I mentioned at the top of this post, a large part of the stress involves other people's response to the pandemic, from arrogance to ignorance to outright hatred and politicization of one of the deadliest pandemics in the past century. And it saddens me and angers me, but... I will do with it what I do with all experiences in my life; I will use it to fuel my creativity. I will write about it, contribute positively to the conversation, and try to make a positive difference to the world. I invite you to join me, not in hatred or ignorance, but in loving activism.

I don't think it's affected them at all, to be honest, because the people I know and work with are educated and intelligent and have already figured out that we're not even out of the first wave yet, and that openings have been premature and foolish. This virus has not yet even unleashed it's...

This virus has not yet even unleashed it's barbed tail yet, and the criminally negligent lies by the White House squatter are only going to be believed by the unintelligent.
Customers have disappeared -- now THERE is a difference in customer experience, lol! It's forced me to go out looking for opportunities, to engage more not just with potential clients but with other filmmakers, collaborating on bigger goals and projects, taking on far more of the responsibility....

It's forced me to go out looking for opportunities, to engage more not just with potential clients but with other filmmakers, collaborating on bigger goals and projects, taking on far more of the responsibility. I've never wanted to direct or produce and here I am, a producing partner in a start-up film company. And I'm even eyeing directing at some point. So in a way it's been good, a challenge that's forced me to either step up or step back and I'm not one much for stepping back if I can help it.

Nearly all of my networking is online, not just because of the pandemic but because, as a writer, I tend to communicate better and more convincingly in text rather than in real life!!! A flaw, I will admit, but then being a writer makes up for it somewhat.

My chief concern is that the reopening is happening without adhering to the guidelines that even the White House agreed to. My chief concern is that now that Trump has made wearing a mask "uncool" and "geeky," "weak" and a statement of support for the "opposition," that we will not only precipitate a second spike in the first wave of the pandemic, but that we will make ourselves even less ready for any second wave of the pandemic. My chief concern is that Trump and his followers have inserted hatred and ignorance and politics into a medical matter in order to get him re-elected. The one positive note is that even some Republican governors and senators are STARTING to resist this new attempt to sacrifice the nation for his political and personal ambitions. Drinking bleach, eliminating climate change legislation, mocking mask wearers, waging political war against governors of AMERICAN states, all of this after having sold the country out to the Russians... I do not want ANYONE, not republicans, not Trump, not McConnell, to be hurt by this virus. So my chief concern, then, is that we do not have the leadership at the federal and in many cases the state level to deal with the first wave, the second spike or the second wave of this pandemic and that the ones who will suffer most will be our elderly, our first responders, our healthcare workers, even our military -- the best of us.
