As the Founder of my non-profit (25+ years) Organization, we have found by adding Support Sponsors (donors) to our website with a link to their Business has been something they really appreciate, as well Spotlighting through interviews, site posts, newspaper article mentions, poster mentions, etc. etc.  At one time we had Business Window decals identifying them as Supporters, framed Certificate of Appreciation...  A sad truth about many non-profits is the lack of true Community support or engaging.  My non-profit Organization now offers Fiscal Sponsorship in the A&E Industry.  Many churches also have a non-profit status but do nothing in their Community.   In response to Roger Sweatt (Commentator below), I have never receive a  paycheck, paid holiday or retirement, any form of insurance and often our multiple Community wide events (where thousands were helped with school supplies, food, new socks & undergarments, etc.)  would cost out of pocket in addition to the generous donations of business supporters.  OUT OF POCKET.  My Organization was one of hundreds who housed evacuees from Katrina, Rita and Ike... We lost tens of thousands of dollars for helping as we did; but we would do it all over again if need be.
