A small dry cleaner that I have been going to (both with my parents as a kid and as an adult) for the past 40 years. Incredible Customer Service. They closed up pretty quickly and had been in business for 50 years. They were the original owners and immigrated here from Vietnam. They will be missed. (more) For me personally, it was when we were assisting a concrete construction company regarding a concrete job they performed on a high end project in the heart of Downtown Portland, Oregon. The client is a gentleman who has owned his construction company for over 50 years and is now in his late 70's. The way he had operated his company for over 35 years was with a handshake, or agreement written down on a napkin from a local pub. Obviously as time went on, he had to adjust to the age of computers, change orders, liens, disagreements on scope of work, etc. While adjusting to the changing times he was reluctant to be litigious and pursue parties for money due to him on his projects. The phrase "lawsuit" was and still is to this day an unknown concept to him and he still doesn't understand why people cannot just follow through with their agreements and bypass all the negativity that has flourished with modern times and certainly in the construction world. Advance 15 years later and he came to us with a potential buyer for his company, as he decided to sell as he was nearing 80 and with the decade plus of all the red tape in the construction industry, he was tired of all the politics and sell. I had previously worked with him over the past 12 years in my previous law firm, so we have a great relationship. He needed assistance in the transactional portion of the sale. We assisted him and were able to close the deal and when it was concluded, he was still the owner of the receivables due to him under the old company name. One of those accounts was a very large California developer that was completing a high end hotel in Downtown, Portland. Our client was due some $60,000 on the project since 2015. Our client's contract was with the general contractor who referred our client to the developer who our client had no contractual relationship with and had no real and legal obligation to pay. Being on his own now, having sold his company of over 50 years, there was no real income stream and he was on a pretty fragile budget and couldn't afford a long, drawn out litigation process. Fast forward several months later and we were successfully in getting our client dollar for dollar, the entire $60,000+ with no litigation. When I presented the check and settlement agreement to our client, there were tears in his eyes and he was happier than a kid in a modern candy store with a free pass to anything he wanted. Making the client so happy, based on the outcome of his hard work, not ours, some 3 years later was bitter, bitter satisfaction.
