How We Got Started

The founder of (949) Local Internet Marketing, Jim Froling, was a successful corporate sales and marketing executive in the computer and consumer electronics industry for nearly 30 years.

Jim worked hard to earn the trust of local and regional retailers to stock and merchandise his brands. Due to their success, the "Big Box" chains noticed and cut deals that undercut "the locals".

Jim protested. "You dance with the date that brought you". That was and remains Jim's philosophy.

Tired of corporate politics and constant travel, he realized he could help small businesses here in Orange County. He knew he could help them leverage the power of the Internet to improve their business and the lives of lo

(949) Local was created to help local businesses in Orange County particularly. What we do for the "locals in OC", we can do for any SMB anywhere. But this is where our heart is.

Much different now.  It is crucial for local businesses to have as many oars in the water as possible:  1) Local Organic Search (Google, Yelp, Angie's List, etc.) 2) Paid Search (Google Ads, Yelp For Business...) 3) Email Marketing 4) Social Media Engagement 5) Text Messaging 6) "Old School" or analog marketing (direct mail, coupons, etc.).  I know there is still a space for the "old guys". First thing, establish a budget.  Then allocate that budget among the "oars" listed above.  Don't worry about having to allocate something to every category.  If you can only do two categories, fine.  But do them well! Give your various campaigns 90 days to prove themselves.  Make the adjustments along the way as necessary. After 90 days, set a calendar reminder to review the performance of your various campaigns.  What was the ROI of each?  What was the reach of each?  Then, make adjustments. Marketing is not a sprint.  It is a marathon.  Prize winning runners will tell you it is not who gets off the starting line first that will win the race.  Rather, it is the runner who crosses the finish line first. And they will tell you that they had a Plan, a Strategy, and dedication to Execution that led to their achievement.

"Local Search" is a big deal today for national brands and "Mom&Pop" businesses alike.  Marketing a business or an event locally (your town or a town across the country) requires leveraging an increasing number of "local" platforms.   Alignable is great for visibility with other local businesses and you can expand your "circle of influence".  Simply reach out to a contact here in Perth Amboy and ask them to promote your event in Woodbridge.      NextDoor is great for reaching consumers in local communities and is really coming on.  And they recently announced the means to reach them at a cost effective rate. Google, of course.  Businesses strive for placement in the local "Three Pack" on the first page of local search results.  Driven by their Google My Business platform with Google Maps the engine.  However, depending on the population density and/or competitiveness of a business, Google can define "local" as a radius of a few miles or a few counties.  Want to target a local zip code(s) miles from your physical location?  See Google Ads (formerly AdWords) and pay for a click. Yelp is pure evil, but a necessary one.  And potentially a costly one.  "Paid" placements are now the norm for nearly all "local searches". But wait, there's more!  A lot more and too much to list all here.  But the above will certainly get you started.  Just leverage the platforms and engage your contacts.

If you're not listed on Google My Business, do it now!  It's free.  82% of Google users search with a local intent.  This is how to reach them. Google has added a bunch of new features over the past year that can help you stand out from the herd.  And more are expected throughout this year.   The goal is to have your listing appear in the "Local 3 Pack", the area at the top of the page (below the ads).  But even if you're not in the pack, you'll still get some visibility.  But it will take time so be patient.  It's easy to sign up at https://www.google.com/business/ Bing has a similar local business platform called Places for Business.  You can't expect much traffic from it (<10% of Google's), but a click is a click, right?  And, if nothing more, it is a high authority domain and will give your site more relevance and reliability in Google's eyes.  Yes, Google crawls other search engines.  Can you speed up the process?  Sure!  First, list your business at the three data aggregators: Express Update (InfoGroup), Factual and Neustar.  Although it is free to list your businesses here, it can be a pain and very frustrating.  Best to use a service like Moz which can list you at each as well as a number of "high authority" domains.  You pay an annual fee but it's worth it. Then go get backlinks.  These hyperlinks to your website from other websites.  Your local chamber of commerce is a good one.  If you support a charity, kids sports team, etc., insist on them listing your support on their website, newsletter, etc. with a link to your website!  Other business associates websites are awesome also. This is all tip of the iceberg stuff, but it will get you started.  The deeper you go down the rabbit hole, it can become overwhelming.  In that case, reach out to a Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) consultant or agency.  Well worth the investment.

However, if you can't get visibility on certain keywords, or outside of your local area, or are new and haven't earned any organic Page One visibility, then look to AdWords. We have taken over AdWords campaigns from many of the other "agencies" mentioned here. And we have not yet found one that utilized what Google would characterize as "best practices". Long lists of under performing or non-performing keywords, all broad matched. No call outs, sitelink extensions, call extensions, etc. None of the "extras" that get our ads on the top of page with the added real estate that helps prompt clicks, and more important, conversions (phone calls, form fills, etc.). Just as a website should be optimized to gain a shot at the first page of SERPs (Search Engine Results Page), an AdWords campaign needs to be optimized also. That means a landing page that is relevant to the keywords and the ad. A clear Call To Action (CTA). And taking advantage of all the free real estate available through sitelinks, call outs, and more. The metrics that Google delivers are so deep but very insightful. Some here express doubts of their accuracy. It's easy to check. Compare AdWords reported traffic against your analytics from your web host or Google Analytics. I'm sure you'll see a strong correlation. The bottom line is this. If you can get high organic positioning across a broad area and keyword spectrum, FABULOUS! If you can't, find a Google Certified AdWords Partner. They have the training and experience to get it done right for you.

Only because most small business owners we deal with have NO IDEA! They typically don't have Google Analytics installed which provides such great metrics on visitors, time on the site, pages visited, pages left abruptly, etc. etc. A very valuable resource and it is FREE! So many websites are poorly designed from an SEO perspective. Tell your website designer that you insist on unique title tags and meta descriptions on EVERY page of your site. And Schema markup also! It's not often that all major search engines agree on anything but Schema is one thing they do. This is a small snippet of code that is placed in the header or footer of a web page and it tells search engines what the business and the page is all about. This also is free and you can find out all about, as well as generate custom code for your site, at www.schema.org. If your site designer's mouth hangs open when you mention these basic fundamental elements...RUN AWAY! They have no clue about what they're doing other than creating a "pretty" website. Insist on functional first.
