Studio Montclair Inc. is a nonprofit, professional visual arts organization dedicated to promoting culture and education in the visual arts through a variety of programs and events including exhibitions, lectures, workshops, seminars, gallery tours and special events, and encouraging and supporting emerging artists.

SMI offers a breadth of opportunities for visual artists to bring their work to the public through innovative, thought-provoking exhibitions and programming. In 2018, SMI opened 3 spaces that provide opportunities to its membership: its flagship space - Studio Montclair Gallery - a street level, 1,000 sf dedicated gallery/office space, Studio Montclair@KW, an exhibit space and store for fine art and fine crafts, and SMI Incubator@ Academy Square, an incubator space for artists new to exhibiting their work.

SMI was founded in 1997 when the exhibition “The Montclair Art Colony: Past and Present” opened at the Montclair Art Museum. Viewers were invited to extend their visit to downtown Montclair, where five artists organized an exhibit showcasing an additional 46 local artists called “The Rest of the Colony.” The synergy and excitement from this collaboration grew into the creation of a professional visual arts organization.
