My main problem has been to hire or re-hire qualified workers. The $600/week, added to their regular unemployment benefits has made it nearly impossible for this small business to match the government hand-outs. I am not against this $600 thing but not as an umbrella entitlement. It should go and be prorated for, families really in need. I heard a waiter at a restaurant, the other day, sharing with a co-worker the following: This Covid thing is really neat. Not only do I get paid under the table but I also get unemployment plus the $600/week and my income is over $1000/week. That is double what I used to make before Covid!"

With our small business which is 100% service oriented, a combination of 4 factors is what we use:
1-Word of mouth, by the children who ride here, something that requires excellent customer service and ensuring that the kids stay happy and motivated and ultimately bring their friends.
2- Offers throughout companies such as Groupon to first time customers. Granted, you do not really make money at first but you are saving a ton of it by not needing to massively advertise (and you would not be able to reach hundreds of thousands of people the way they do, anyway). With a pleasant experience, chances are great that these customers will return at regular rates.
3- Good and regular management of Social Media, engaging the potential customers, posting pictures, etc..
4- Small, but regular ads in niche-specific magazines and websites. As an example, we also do Indian Weddings. Good relationships with the venues, the wedding planners and great service are important, but placing a few inexpensive business card size ads in Indian (local) magazines generate excellent, measurable results.
If you are in the service business, as we are, my suggestion is to wait until the activity is over then give them a flyer thanking them for participating, giving them a small discount for the next activity and spelling out the links where they could post a good review. (That's assuming they had a good time, of course :-) . Otherwise, an email will serve the same purpose.

Rather than bundle different activities, we offer (Horseback)riding lesson cards of eight which offer a discount of $5 per lesson as well as a "Loyalty card" attached to each card. Then, upon buying their 6th card, customers get a $100 off #7.We keep the cards on file in the office. This not only helps with cash flow, but also saves time for both the customer and the office person at time of check-in. It also ensures that all the activities are done within a certain time frame as the card is only valid for 6 months from date of first use. Literally 90% of our regular customers do it that way!
Contacts (good ones, that is) are a much better "investment" because they imply "residuals"!
