Not only is this relevant for anyone--at any stage of entrepreneurship, but it is your personal challenge to get the hell out of your comfort zone because you need to do this to be successful. Prior to starting my Marketing company with my business partner, my responsibility was to shepherd a team of Strategists, Copywriters, and Creative Directors to deliver integrated marketing campaigns for blue chip clients. There is now no one for me to turn to for developing a creative concept, writing a script, drawing a storyboard, scouting a location or casting the right talent. I'm the guy. And, I love it! So use this lesson to set the bar as high as you want. You will be amazed to see what you've accomplished. Then, from there...

And, this is not to take a swipe at those in the print game, but it is based on where the consumption of media is going. Three platforms stick out: 1) Video...the manner in which people want to be spoken to 2) Mobile...where they are living their lives and 3) Social...where people are learning what's happening the locally and in the world. Now, I said generally speaking, because extremely targeted print can still be effective if you want to close the deal with a particular customer (maybe a personal or handwritten note or card); but as a mass marketing effort, I would say no.

Here's what I mean: you are dismissing the work you do as "not very emotional or transformative." Improve energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important, so the more you can position yourself not just as ANY subject matter expert on this, but THE subject expert for your area, I think that can bode very well for you. How do you do that? Inform clients in advance (and in abundance) about the process and how it will benefit them. And, do it with a smile. My other point--and, maybe you are downplaying this in written form, but the manner in which you describe asking them for a referral sounds uninspired and passive (I also wouldn't just ask for a referral, solicit feedback--good or bad, so you can learn where you need to improve). But you need to take pride that you provide a very tangible benefit to customers. When you can do this in a very personable fashion, people will be more readily to recall and refer Tyler, who also did an amazing job. There doesn't have to be a "Wow" moment coming from your customers. People today will settle for a job well done at a fair price. When you can consistently deliver the first part, the "fair" price has a tendency to rise.

I do know that if you can center in on the ONE thing that differentiates your Company from others--and be consistent in driving that point home with prospects, you can "own" that advantage. The more compelling Unique Selling Proposition you can have prospects associate your Company/Brand as being able to deliver upon, the greater likelihood you'll see an increase in sales. Also, try to think beyond price (as in offering the lowest price) as your one advantage. If you focus on this, you are automatically forcing customers to make a rational decision (and, you will lose out to the anyone offering a lower price than yours). Instead, push the value (however YOU define it). Consumers have always shown a willingness to pay a little more for value when it is relevant and clearly (and creatively) communicated.

If you think it is beneficial to have one, don't be afraid to get creative with it (again, in line with your personal brand). Leaving all with this last thought: We all know the time-tested adage "People buy from people". That means people gravitate towards personal stories, and a headshot really can't provide this. If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine how many words a video is worth...

In terms of effectiveness, think it is less about which medium and more about which platform marketers should give special focus to. The three that dominate among consumers? Video. Mobile. Social. The sweet spot is when your marketing communication is able to leverage all three. Video is the runaway format leader in terms of HOW consumers like to receive information. Mobile is WHERE they are living their lives. And Social is the WHY stage that initiates dialogue, validates information, ranks performance, solicits feedback and helps shape attitudes to influence choice. Great question!
