I was a developer/system designer/support supervisor all in one package before venturing out on my own. I worked for companies serving large well-known brands in Corporate America and was astounded at the fees we charged for a website.
I decided that there was little chance that most small businesses could afford paying thousands of dollars for a website, so I calculated an affordable price-point that would be more palatable to small business owners and still allow me to meet my financial obligations. I then left my near six-figure position and started Avatar Website Design, joined the local chamber of commerce and BNI. This has led to a moderately successful web services business. I continue to add services I believe a small business owner needs, and at affordable pricing.
I really enjoy the surprise I see when I quote a project and the even more rewarding looks I receive when owners review their finished websites. All of those long hours working behind the scenes with little or no recognition for a corporate entity never provided the enjoyment and satisfaction I achieve with each satisfied customer in my own web service business.

Honesty regarding fees, listening to their needs, confirming I understood their website vision, and maintaining the relationship with regular communication after the project was on-boarded because the "project" is never done in my line of work. There is always a need for additional changes as the customer's business evolves and web technology evolves. I realize these are several ingredients, but they are all "key" in getting and keeping a client.
