Pierette, 72, called our Founder from rural Quebec. Her husband Jean, 76, was frantic and unable to sleep. “Jean keeps saying this is the night he is going to die,” she told me.
Jean had been diagnosed with cancer four months earlier. He felt abandoned by the health system, telling our Founder, “I worked hard my whole life, paid my taxes, was never sick—and now, when I need them, they don’t care. Doctors spend less than five minutes with me at my scheduled visits.”
We called a friend, Dr. Malik, and asked him to speak with Jean. Within an hour, Pierette called back. “Thank you so much. Jean is sound asleep. The doctor spoke to him for 20 minutes—he felt heard and cared for.” Dr. Malik promised to follow up whit him as well.
Sadly, Jean passed away 6 months later. He was indeed a hardworking man, strong and proud. This event was the impetus for MembersHealth, as I witnessed first-hand the difference that timely, compassionate and open communication with a Doctor had on someone's life.
