When I purchase artwork it is done by many criteria. Quality of work, price, subject matter. An artist's bio is always important to understand the consistency of the quality. There are more things that make up decisions.

There is not a misconception about artwork if the total process is explained in a proper way.
There are willing buyers and willing sellers. The only variable is what the buyer is willing to pay.

There are willing buyers and willing sellers. The only variable is what the buyer is willing to pay.
If it takes an artist a year to produce 4 paintings, and wants to earn 100,000 a year, then he needs to receive 25,000 per painting. If no one wants to pay that price the, obviously no paintings will be sold.
It is all very simple supply and demand, if similar works sell for 10,000 the there is no demand at 25,000. The reason artists have agents is to help him create a demand. But the agent wants to get paid for his creativity and work. Normally an artist does not have the time to both sell and paint.
People acquire artwork that someone else tells them that the they should like. Not what the buyer actually likes or feels good about.
