There are many avenues for you to consider for how you reach out — google ad words, social media campaigns, banner ads on websites that reach your target audience, direct mail, promotional products.  I think one other thing you can do is when you decide on how you will run your campaign — you may want to do some split testing.  Speaking from the point of view of a graphic designer, it is easy to believe int he concept you have created for your marketing, but by split testing the message with different visuals and taglines you may find certain looks and language resonate better with your audience than other visuals.  if you hire me to create one social media graphic, creating variations on that theme is financially worth it. I can create, 3-5 sets of visuals with the same theme and then you can send them out over a period of time — see which one gets the most likes, shares, and comments. It is just another way to broaden your appeal to potential customers.

(more) I do not believe it is either necessary or unnecessary — It really depends on what a business sets as its goals and that can be a little different for each business. Some businesses are going to perform better on social media than others. Retail is likely to outperform B2B. But as with all things in any advertising, the visual and message has to resonate with the audience you are trying to reach. The quality of that visual, combined with brief, concise messaging and more than likely a specific offer is sure to get attention. Like with a magazine ad, you have maybe a second to grab the attention of your target as they are scrolling through their feed. So it has to be a strong visual. As a graphic designer I am being asked more and more to create visuals for social media. At a time where the "brick and mortar" shop is slowly fading into the past, Malls suffering more and more in the same way as Main Street's have all across America and newspapers and magazines slimming down, getting the word out on your business is vital. Social media offers typically a less expensive way to advertise as opposed to some traditional media.  My last point — as with any campaign on any media — it takes time. I still express to clients that no matter the media they are engaging — they are likely better off with a great visual and message on a smaller ad that is presented consistently over months then it is to try and hit a grand slam with a giant one-off. People that see the ad on their scroll a few times are more likely to stop and look closer than just a one-time thing.
