I am not a Veteran but I am the Son of a Veteran so I'll answer this in a simple manner. It takes for any Veteran the same that it takes for anyone to start a business - to have a vision of a need that can be filled on unique or commodity level. A Unique product requires market tests and proof of demand and funding viability backed by demand ie sustainable and growable sales lines. For a Commodities business ie coca cola resales or a corner store it takes pricing, foot traffic and low rent or overhead. You should write and draft a plan as careful as a campaign with logistics mapping and statistics of market, supply, demand and demographics in pertinence to your zone and scale of operations . The Army, The Core, The Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard exist in similar to industry, non profit and govt entities on other lines with different mission goals to revert to think in terms of growth, risk and logistics with #STEM / #DCarsonCPA #GRLSTEM Replacing other objectives now your objectives are to know your environment, to study your terrain - the community, the market, the product, the sector, regulatory, tax, financial, legal and tech aspects and community aspects ie how do you fit to the model of industry, non profit, govt and community flows - understanding this helps your approach. Try to sample demand lines for your unique product on web with presales and pre-order lines to build marketing lists on interests from concept to needs. If you have a store need before you buy in clock and count foot traffic for any retail or restaurant, bar, hotel, business or entertainment line in compliment to web lines for dual channels on sales. Do not invest in off the main line nobody goes there space - look for logistically well positioned property to find and move supplies in reference to your geography, demograhics, supply and demand. Leverage SBA support for Veteran Owned business training and counseling for your business plan. Consider Plumbing, Electrician or Technology work in demand for longevity of horizon to needs if relevant to your AVSAB or evolved skills these are work lines of constant demand and in my mind provide best avenues to current needs at large. Get your business plan straight with a tactical mindset adapted to the more mundane lines of a business and the adapted lines of growth, risk and logistics as a mindset map with STEM and Communications to Teamwork. Have a vision, communicate the vision to your plan, work the plan and pursue growth or learn and adapt if plans fail to work so have an entrance and exit plan and a plan to sustain and adapt with lean and agile supply lines. Think now as a business first then to the icing on the cake of how your experience as a veteran where properly adapted to supporting a team of clients, vendors, business partners, bankers, regulators, shareholders and community stakeholders can help you adapt to your new lines. Your competitors may have synergy or may provide knowledge of the market in similar but different ways from an opposing line on the field. Think first as a business and what makes the business goals different from and similar to a military field, ground and environment your boots still fit in terms of discipline, knowing who you are, where you are and how to map logistics and a field but the field is not at cost or peril of life it is at financial cost which is on some terms the ways to means of objectives on both lines. Veterans can and should be able to anticipate some level of community support on outreach, awareness and client lines but service is also very important. In the Business Space price, convenience and service attentiveness to clients reachable and reasonable needs makes sense in compliment. Your prestige will make people with the right compass proud to support your lines at the same time do not lose sight that it is a business and you must find ways to meet and support client needs and your needs with sustainable costs, redundant suppliers, continuity plans, entrance and exit strategies, different factor models to pnl as best , middle and worst case projections and try to find strong team members and formalize agreements as to contributions and expectations if working with others on this. This deserves much more attention then I can provide to this in this space but hopefully the above helps. On direct service lines I can be more effective to needs. I wish you well and if you are a veteran reading this your service is valued remember that this is just a new level of service in a different way where your having a code and strong moral compass will make a difference. Believe in the skills you learned and adapt them to the new context of an entity in relation to policy and community lines on needs of supply and demand, in the logistics role that every business ultimately maps to in growth and risk contexts that may differ in objectives but somehow remain constant to statistics, economics, funding, man and women power, tech and communications and knowledge to services needs. Godspeed and wish you well on your new endeavors. Thank you for your service and know that people are proud to support Veterans AND that the business model must map to a sustainable line of support to supply and demand needs so you need to endeavor a bit to think in terms of macro economics (the economy) and micro Economics (the entity and the community lines to individuals and families). Leverage SBA programmatic support as a no cost line to learn more for your needs as a Veteran pursuing a Business. What you already know and have learned in service if correctly bridged to the new theatre of community needs on logistics with customer service and relationship skills to clients, investors, bankers, v
endors, regulators and others in the lines helps you begin to adapt. Run a compare contrast of the military service goals to the community services lines and adaptations to industry, non profit and govt to community lines and know that they are all inter-dependent to entity, policy and community needs. Good Luck and Strong Success! Study Hard, Plan and Succeed Well with adaptive plans on entrance, modification to on the ground learnings and an exit plan jic. Dean Carson DCarsonCPA NYC

Before you do anything map out your needs, wants, budgets and expectations and reconcile them to deliverables per the consultant even if in general terms, even in collaborative terms to open the discussion to consider what it is in general to specific terms you are after. Interview a number of vendors consultants in an ethical manner of full transparency and let the consulting test be how the consultant will achieve, compliment and ideally exceed your vision with an action plan. Better planning and communications leads to better outcomes, communications can be shared lines to evolving directional planning. The better the planning, the more clarity to destination and outcomes.
