My involvement in my community keeps my name in the paper on a regular basis. As such when people do need my products they like to buy from a company that gives back to their community.
It is very important that you add late charges to your contracts, etc. I recommend 2% per month. Without doing this you are giving your customer a free loan. If it costs them less to "borrow" from you than a credit card or a bank they will. At 24% a year you won't mind lending money.

If I am meeting with a plumber he has different needs than a heating contractor or a building management company. Be sure to hand them a business card first (don't make them remember your name). Have goodies (pens, pads, etc.) and literature and/or samples. You want them to know that you have the solutions to their problems. Every potential has a need that you must show them you can fulfill better, faster, & friendlier than their competition. Never make it about price! Someone will always be willing to beat the price, make it about relationships.
