Hi Richard,
This is something I have toyed with in the back of my mind for quite a while. There is such a huge lack of any understanding what-so-ever at the small business level.
I would love to chat about it.

The unfortunate answer to this question is ... it depends.
It depends on your business model. It depends on you target audience. It depends on your collateral. It depends on the strengths and skills of your team.

What you need is to talk to someone for 30-45 minutes who understands all these factors, and understands how each of the various social sites can either help or hinder your efforts.
You need to make yourself "known" - marketing is key for a small business, especially a solo entrepreneur. There are lots of ways to at least get people to see you:

Chamber of Commerce Events, Professional Networking Events (LeTip, BNI, TEAM, etc.), Civic Organizations (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc), and any other public type events.
BUT ... don't go there with "commission breath" ... don't go to "sell" ... go to "meet" ... talk about anything *EXCEPT* business. Make friends. Set up times to meet folks for coffee and to find out what *THEY* do, and how they do it. Find out how you can help *THEM* ...
Over time, you will start getting referrals. Because the natural progression of you helping others is that they will help you. But it won't happen overnight, so you need to be very, very patient.
You also need to figure out *WHY* people should be coming to you - and you need to educate your potential clients on *WHY* they need you. Most people have no clue about what you do, so over coffee, when they ask "And what do you do?", have some very clear, very concise, very specific answers, hopefully based on what *they* do. Because they might just know someone in their field that needs what you have.
BOOM! Referral.
