What's The Craziest Small Biz Story You've Experienced?

In June of 1982, I lost my job at a plastic factory while attending college. I had numerous jobs that summer and one of them was going door to door selling Kirby vacuum cleaners. Every morning we would sing to the beat of a snare drum, "we have joy, joy, joy, down in my carpet" and "Roll out the Kirby". That job lasted about a month. Later that summer, I applied for a job as a car salesman at the local Oldsmobile dealer. The Sales manager told me that he hired me for two reasons. One, he liked my energy and he said that anyone who can go door to door and sell vacuum cleaners, can sell cars. I sold cars for almost three years but didn't like pressuring people to purchase a vehicle. My wife had a friend who's father owned an independent adjusting company and he was looking to train someone as a automobile adjuster. He asked me to ride with one of his adjusters and see if it might be something that I was interested in. After the ride along, I informed him that I was interested and he said he would let me know. I called for six months, but he wasn't ready to hire. Two months after I quit calling him, he called me and asked me if I would be interested in becoming a truck adjuster. He hired me and I worked there for almost nine years. I was recruited by a well known truck insurance company and worked my way up to a field manager and supervised ten field adjusters. After 25 years with this company, I decided to retire and start my own independent adjusting company with my wife. I had established many relationships with insurance companies throughout the industry through the National Truck and Heavy Equipment Claims Council. I started my company in December of 2018 and business has been great. I enjoy being back in the field and being face to face and being my own boss. Even though I'm in my early sixties, I have a few good years left in me and I love what I do! I wish I had done it sooner but I'm glad that I made the move.
